Delmer Ellsworth Hicks, 91, of South Portsmouth, KY, went to be with the Lord on October 1, 2018, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Delmer was born on August 22, 1927 in Floyd County, KY, the son of the late William and Mary Ann (Coburn) Hicks. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Agnes (Applegate) Hicks.
As a child, his family affectionately nicknamed him "Buster", which is a name that stuck with him throughout his life. Delmer was a sergeant at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado, where he served as a Dental Laboratory Technician. He later moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, where he met and married the love of his life, Agnes (Applegate) Hicks. For over 50 years Delmer owned and operated Scioto Dental Laboratory in Portsmouth, OH. He once made a partial that was worn by President Eisenhower. Delmer also owned and operated the Buster's Bi Lo convenience stores and was the current owner of Ohio Valley Propane, where he was actively working. He was a member of the Saint Paul Church of Christ, Firebrick, KY. Delmer received the title of Kentucky Colonel for his noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to his community and the state of Kentucky.
Delmer leaves behind a legacy of 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren who will miss him greatly and will love and admire him always. Surviving are his children: Pam Cox of South Shore, Kentucky; Stephanie (Bob) Barnett of Ironton, Ohio; Delmer Eric (Teresa) Hicks of Portsmouth, Ohio; and Michelle (Jeff) Gleim of Pittsburg, PA. in addition to his wife and children he is survived by by 11 grandchildren: Amy Sizemore, Jessica Haas and Andrea Cronin; Katy, Wesley, Sarah and Trenton Barnett; Delmer, Evan and Emily Hicks; Todd and Tyler Gleim. Delmer is also survived by 9 great-grandchildren (Braxton, Cayden, Carson, Ava, Gage, Aubrey, Aiden, Jaxson and Easton) and sister, Pearle Shannon Fulk, and brother, Garrett Hicks.
In addition to his parents, Delmer was also proceeded in death by sisters: Sylvia Wright Raines, Triylbia Osborne, Viola Beverly, Katherine Onley; and brothers Bertral Hicks and Elmer Hicks.
Calling hours are 6 till 8 P.M. on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the Roberson Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, South Shore, KY. The funeral services will be held at Saint Paul Church of Christ, South Portsmouth, KY, at 1 P.M. on Friday, October 5, 2018 with Pastor Glenn Lawhun, officiating. Calling hours from 11 A.M. until the funeral hour. Burial will follow in Collier Memorial Gardens, South Portsmouth, KY.
